CALL OF VALHALLA: A HEAVY METAL EPIC FOR GUITAR AND DIGITAL ORCHESTRA A few lessons before Christmas of 2008, Matt asked me, "How does one write a song?", and that is when our collaboration in this instrumental Heavy Metal piece began. It is now completed and is titled "Call of Valhalla". In the past, I had written songs with students, many of which got to have sound public performances. On this occasion, I chose to take this project under my wing to a professional recording studio (Boxer Studios). As a freelance guitarist and a teacher, I wanted to merge both sides of my profession, so that young and upcoming guitar players learn about the adventure, the effort and the joy of being a creative artist. With no further delay I want to introduce to you Matthew Schroeder: Student of the Mount Royal Conservatory, outstanding pupil of my guitar studio and collaborator of "Call of Valhalla". Cheers Matt, we did it!! |

At my guitar studio students learn to play the instrument by following an individual plan. Whereas I am classically educated, my main focus is on contemporary guitar, especially rock. I teach all styles, all levels, and I welcome all ages. My studio instructions range from basic learning, singing and playing, classical and/or flamenco instruction, to soloing and improvisational skills, songwriting tips, and college/university preparation. I provide my students with a safe environment for learning. These are a few comments that some of my students have to say about their lessons:
- " I was in grade 6 of classical guitar when I thought I needed a change. I joined Roberto's studio looking for rock guitar lessons. It was an extreme but refreshing transition going from classical to Metal. As a result of this new environment, I began to indulge in classic and progressive rock, jazz, funk and electronica. Yet, there are still a lot of technical aspects and ways of interpretation that are the same as the classical guitar. I'm fascinated by the particular beauties of each style and also pleased to confirm that the challenges of the fretboard, regardless the genre, remain as one."
- S. F. Davies.
- "I have taken guitar lessons for 6 years now. No other kind of music speaks to me like Metal does. It's a primal call, like a wolf with the moon. Its guttural vocals, heroic guitars tuned to drop-C, and the pounding of fire-breathing drums are my equation. To me, Metal is an unstoppable feeling of exhilarating power. Once a metalhead, always a metalhead. It's sick. Roberto shows me the way."
- Red Dart Badger.
- "When Roberto asked me what music meant to me, this is what I said: 'Music is a lifetime journey. By pursuing the answers to the enigmas of this heavenly force we are in return blessed with human growth. You feel empowered. It draws you closer to other people to celebrate the gift of life. Music is a collaborative effort. Rock is my music, but as a guitarist, I can appreciate greatness in all styles. If music is your journey, be prepared to offer your best: Your soaring soul, a parachute-like mind (best at work when open), and wicked, wicked hands'".
- M. Schroeder.
